It is with deep respect and sadness that we remember and honor the life of Dennis Kozlowski of Hampton, a legendary coach, educator, and mentor whose passing has left former students, athletes, colleagues, and the entire Bethel High School community in mourning.
Coach Kozlowski, affectionately known as “Coach Koz,” dedicated his life to shaping young athletes and building programs rooted in discipline, resilience, and excellence. Beginning his career at Bethel High School in 1968, he spent decades molding generations of student-athletes in both football and track, leaving a legacy that extended far beyond the scoreboard.
As head football coach beginning in 1974, Coach Koz led his teams to remarkable success, including multiple state championships and 172 career wins. His leadership also transformed the track program, producing numerous state champions and building one of the most respected athletic traditions in Virginia high school sports. His influence later extended into his role as athletic director, where Bethel continued to thrive under his guidance.
But beyond the victories and championships, Coach Koz was known for something far greater—his ability to instill mental toughness, discipline, and perseverance in every athlete who played for him. He demanded hard work and accountability, pushing his players to become stronger not just physically, but mentally and personally.
To many former players, he was a defining figure in their youth. His long hours of preparation, his commitment to film study, and his unmistakable presence around campus became part of Bethel’s identity. Though tough in coaching style, he inspired loyalty, respect, and lasting admiration from those who came through his program.
To his family, friends, and former athletes, Coach Koz was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a leader, and a cornerstone of their lives. His influence continues to live on in the values he instilled and the lives he helped shape.
The Bethel High School community and generations of Bruins mourn this tremendous loss while also celebrating a life dedicated to excellence, service, and leadership.
May Dennis “Koz” Kozlowski rest in eternal peace. He will be forever remembered, deeply missed, and always honored.
